Garmin G1000
The most prevalent version of the G1000 certified systems comes with dual flat screen monitors, Garmin GRS77 AHRS, Dual Com/Nav/GPS, audio panel and GFC 700 autopilot. This fully integrated system incorporating GPS steering, altitude and vertical speed pre-selection, flight director, scalable moving maps, fully IFR certified and capable of handling a range of additional features including JeppView electronic charts, XM satellite weather services, Stormscope lightning detection, terrain awareness and warning, onboard radar and satellite music. This very capable system is found in Cirrus SR20/SR22’s, Cessna singles including the Corvalis/Corvalis TT, a variety of Piper models including the Meridian, Mirage, Matrix and Saratoga as well as Bonanza’s, King Air’s, Diamond, Mooney and Socata aircraft. Basic cockpit management training focuses on the essential components and functions of this integrated system including the PFD, the AHRS system, the operation and interface with the Flight Director and GFC 700 flight controller as well as with the radio and navigation systems of the G1000.
Multi Function Display MFD training is initially focused on basic functions and incorporates checklist protocols (where they exist), navigating between pages, bezel keys / soft keys and their functions, system set-ups, database updating and so forth.
Beyond normal procedures, training covers abnormal and emergency procedures, what to do when things don’t work properly.
Additional training designed to encompass any additional systems your airplane contains is available as desired. Many of these systems are mostly automatic providing information via the MFD with little inflight activity needed other than knowing how to get to it. Other components take a bit more effort creating the potential need for pilot training to get full utilization out of it.
All of these components require practice, repeated use and, on occasion, some follow-up refresher training. These gadgets provide us with a wealth of information and, as they become second nature, they become true safety enhancing systems.
